God's Humor or Not!

God is so funny, or maybe not! We finally arrived in Santa Cruz la Lagna, a place where we will live for the next 2 months while we take private Spanish lessons one on one for four hours a day. Well, we arrived at this beautiful place and were escorted to the house of the family that we were to live with. The home was high in the hills and living there would require walking up and down a mountain 2-3 times a day for school and meals.

The next morning we contacted the school and asked that we find a different place to live. I couldn't believe how nice they were and they quickly made arrangements with a hotel right on the water, a beautiful place, and for a really discounted price, almost the same price we were paying to stay with the family. Where we live now is the most beautiful place, although simple, that I have ever stayed in. The experience reminded me of the poverty of Guatemala, the extremes between those who have money and those who do not, and the difficult circumstances of so much of the population. I feel a little guilty living in such a nice place, although we are not paying much, but mostly because I know how so many others just a short distance away are living, their hardships, etc.

I am reminded that for Liz and me this is a journey and that God will continually teach us day by day a little more about his love, desires, and direction in our lives, but for now we are to study, improve our Spanish and to pray.  Our goal and mission here in Guatemala is ultimately to help the people around us with the small abilities and talents we have been given by God but mostly allowing God to do the work.and then while building  relationships we can help others journey toward Christ.
